3 Generations of Pool Builders

To build and service pools that last you have to build a company that lasts.

It took 65 years and three generations of pool builders - Herb and Phyllis Budd, their son Randy Budd, and his son-in-law Chris Volk - to build today's Budd Pools.

  • 1958

    Budd’s Pools founded

In 1958, Herb Budd founded Budd’s Pools. That same year, he joined the National Spa and Pool Institute and eventually became a National Director. Although the pool business was just the first businesses Herb would start, pools would become the one and only focus for their son, Randy.

  • 1969

    A kid’s summer job

Randy Budd was 12 years-old when he started working at Budd’s Pools. As one summer job led to another, pool building ultimately became his life’s work.

  • 1982

    Randy takes charge

Randy officially took charge of Budd’s Pools in 1982. He had been managing the business for several years and had already led the company’s exit from other businesses. Now he would proceed to make pools and spas the heart and soul of the company.

  • 1983 - 1996

    The business grows

Randy’s personal work ethic, leadership, and focus on employee training and development would make Budd’s Pools and Spas a regional force in the pool industry. He continually improved the company’s offerings, upgraded the Deptford store, expanded inventory to better serve customers, and added spas and hot tubs.

  • 1997

Randy adds pool services & recruits his son-in-law

In 1997, Randy became one of the first pool builders to develop a professional service team that would be able to provide complete pool maintenance and renovation services. He persuaded his son-in-law, Chris Volk, to join the family pool business as a technician in the new service department.

  • 1998 - 2017

    Randy & Chris at work

Over the years Randy would move Chris into design, engineering, planning, installation, sales, and retail operations. As part of Randy’s succession plan, Chris was to learn and contribute to each job before moving to the next. During this period Chris also continued his college education. He graduated from Rutgers University in 2004 with a BS in Business and Accounting and a minor in Corporate Finance.

  • 2018

    Chris becomes general manager

By the time Chris becomes General Manager in 2018, Randy had introduced him to the full breadth of a complex business that demands close attention to every detail. It was Randy’s mentoring and leadership example that prepared Chris for the next step: total pool and spa projects—from creative design and landscaping to custom building, to expanding pool and spa service capabilities.

  • 2019

Pools, spas, wellness, & outdoor living

By 2019, Chris had set out to make pools and spas the foundation for designing, building, and maintaining complete outdoor living projects. Water, health, and wellness would set the standard for better outdoor living at home.

The new Budd brand & the missing "s"

Our new company name and logo reflect the clean, clear design that has become a hallmark of the Budd design/build/maintain process. For the sake of clarity, simply dropping the apostrophe-s was an easy choice. That possessive construction has been a source of confusion, leading some to think it’s a first name, which then leads to spelling it “Bud’s.” It may take some getting-used-to for those of us who have been saying Budd-with-an-s. But we think the new name and new logo will grow on those accustomed to the Budd’s name and make things clearer for those who are new Budd Pools and Spas.
